Harness the unifying power of school spirit.

Our teams bring together students with and without disabilities to actively cultivate a school culture that values and celebrates all students.

Your school, your rules.

School spirit represents a critical part of school culture. It reflects the level to which students feel: connected to their school, proud to represent their school, and compelled to get involved in school sports, clubs, and activities. Spirit unifies. It fosters a sense of belonging. That's why Generation Spirit creates school-based spirit teams that bring together students with and without disabilities in equal measure and on equal footing.

No experience on a traditional cheer/dance/spirit team? No problem. In truly spirited schools, all students participate in raising school spirit and all students feel supported by the school community. In other words: everyone needs a cheerleader and anyone can be a cheerleader.

When you join Generation Spirit, we'll help you develop a spirit strategy that suits the unique needs of your school community.

Team Requirements

We're dedicated to ensuring that cost is never a barrier to starting a team. In fact, we provide all of our services cost-free. We will ask that you follow the requirements listed below. Why? Because your team is your legacy and teams with staying power have a better chance of igniting lasting change in schools. Teams that follow our requirements experience long-term success and sustainability.

All official Generation Spirit teams must:

  1. Be affiliated with a middle school, high school, or college in the United States.

  2. Be approved by the school's administration.

  3. Select an adult at the school who will advise team captains, facilitate the team’s mission of creating a more inclusive and spirited environment at the school, and serve as a chaperone at practices, activities, meetings, and events.

  4. Be comprised of a minimum 4 students who self-identify as having a disability and 6 students who self-identify as not having a disability. These students comprise a dedicated team.

  5. Select at least two students to serve as 1st and 2nd captain. These students will organize and run meetings/practices and communicate with teammates and school personnel.

  6. Meet/practice a minimum of two times per week for 45 minutes. All team members are expected to be at every practice.

  7. Appear at a minimum of 10 events throughout the school year (Generation Spirit teams are strongly encouraged to identify and support teams or groups that are underrepresented by existing spirit squads).

  8. Wear matching team apparel - in school colors - for spirit raising activities.

  9. Participate in Generation Spirit's free on-site training as the team is being formed and, at a minimum, every three years thereafter. Please note: Generation Spirit is currently offering both on-site and virtual training to all teams.

  10. Fill out and submit an annual online survey, and provide Generation Spirit with contact information for current captains and advisers.

  11. Respond via email to monthly check-ins from Generation Spirit staff.

"Being welcomed on a performance stage is one thing, but being accepted in the school hallways is different. Because our students have an audience, they've become known by their peers."
